   Overview

The Trapper Creek Guest Ranch is an upscale trail riding and fly fishing guest ranch located in the small western town of Shell, Wyoming (population 50) and remote Big Horn Mountains, in Northwest Wyoming — just an hour and a half from Cody, the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

Trapper Creek offers quality riding, not nose to tail riding. Their genuine, personable staff offers an unequaled guest ranch experience, where you can ride big, wide-open country in a variety of landscapes on excellent horses who are surefooted, and well adapted to this country.

Trapper Creek Guest Ranch is a member of The Hideout at Flitner Ranch working cattle and horse guest ranch. The Hideout has always been known for its genuine western hospitality, upscale experience and one-to-one pampering. The accommodations, food, hospitality, attention to detail, riding, horses, tack, and staff meet — and in some areas exceeds —the standards of The Hideout at Flitner Ranch. The Hideout a member of the Dude Ranch Association.

The history of the Trapper Guest Ranch goes back to 1882, the time of the first settlers and homesteaders. During its hay-days in the 1920s, the original guest ranch known as the 16-1 Stock Ranch welcomed affluent guests and “dudes” from back east, including Teddy Roosevelt, Owen Wister and N.C. Wyeth. (Wyeth illustrated popular children’s adventure books like Treasure Island.) Hemmingway stayed at the ranch visiting Owen Wister while he was writing The Virginian.

The Trapper Lodge offers a unique combination of history; the grandeur, warmth and coziness of western log homes in addition to upscale comfort. The lodge and ranch is located alongside Trapper Creek at the only entrance of the Trapper Creek Canyon and framed by dramatic ochre-colored monoliths to the north, nestled at the base of the Bighorn Mountains in north-central Wyoming.

Much like Trapper’s well known early guests; you will explore on horseback rides unique and fascinating geologic formations like Needle Rock, Black Mountain, Red Gulch Dinosaur Track Site, Indian petroglyphs and the ancient Sundance Sea. You will explore the Trapper Creek Canyon Trails, Devils Leap, the walnut grove and other unique trails.

At Trapper Creek, you’re “home.” The American and European staff offers personalized service, great attention to detail and a strong dedication to ensuring your vacation is the stay of a lifetime. Activities abound, yet the blissful atmosphere lends itself perfectly to relaxing in style. The hallmark of your stay is the intimate environment you’ll enjoy, with a maximum of 16 people for lodging and 24 people for dining. Much as at The Hideout, the food and dining is above standards and by or under the supervision of a culinary-schooled chef. Dinners are hosted by a member of the Flitner and De Cabooter family, senior staff, and repeat guests from around the world. Your dining and riding partners may include well-traveled friends, unique personalities, and other individuals who add to the quality of your experience. This is remote country and the traditions of hospitality and good story-telling and sharing remains a tradition.

The views, riding and conversations are inspirational. Reconnect and rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit.
