Overview
The historic Wit’s End Guest Ranch & Resort (originally established in 1859) is a year round ranch located in the heart of the Southern Colorado Rockies on 550 acres of private land. It’s nestled in a small valley surrounded by 12,000 - 14,000 foot peaks. You can savor the elegant accommodations and fine dining in spectacular scenery; deep forests, brilliant blue skies, wildlife, sparkling rivers and Vallecito Lake.
Horseback riding is one of the ranch’s specialties and each guest is given personalized attention. With approximately 75 mountain horses trained to accommodate all levels of riders and children Wit’s End has the horse for you! Wit’s End offers beginning as well as advanced riding. There are all kinds of trails available from easy rides along Vallecito Lake to high mountain trails that will get you close enough to touch the beautiful 14,000 foot peaks. Rides utilize over one million acres of National Forest Lands, where you can actually ride 103 miles in one direction if a wilderness pack trip would be to your liking. At Wit’s End, there are also offer breakfast rides, cattle sorting and gymkahana (horse games) that everyone of every age can participate in, no matter what your riding ability may or may not be!
At Wit’s End the nearby fishing waters have little to no fishing pressure (which is becoming hard to find in this day and age). You'll have an opportunity to float or wade the San Juan and Animas Rivers, which are premier trout streams. You may opt to fish Vallecito Lake, which has provided some petty unbelievable fish over the years. Would you believe a 25lb tout or how about a 48-inch Northern Pike? Most of the record fish in Colorado have come from Vallecito Lake! Wit’s End is out on the lake almost every day with fishing or water sports. Close to the ranch there is fishing on the waters of Vallecito Creek, Los Pinos River and Piedra River. On the ranch, there are three private stocked ponds. You will also have the unique opportunity to fish virtually untouched waters by taking a horseback pack trip into the Weminuche Wilderness, which is located deep inside the San Juan National Forest. Here, the angler will have an opportunity to catch wild trophy cutthroats and rainbows in one of the most awesome settings in the Rockies. Your rod and reel are provided and the streamside fly fishing lodge has everything an angler needs to be fully outfitted.
Enjoy activities such as hiking, fishing, horseback riding, sightseeing, relaxing, hot tubbing, swimming and country dancing. Or take advantage of the sun by mountain biking, river rafting, water skiing, rock climbing, and skeet shooting. You can take part in the many activities and get lost in the history for a vacation of a lifetime!
