Overview
The Buffalo Creek Ranch lies in an entirely private valley covering 25 square miles under the heart of the Continental Divide. Located in northwestern Colorado, the nearest town, Rand, has a population of 14 people. The entire county, Jackson County, has less than two people per square mile, with a total population of 1,500 people. It is, technically speaking, Colorado’s last frontier. Traveling through this sparsely populated, high mountain plain, ringed by snowcapped peaks, feels like you’ve been transported back in time.
Ranching is the primary industry, and the only traffic congestion you might possibly face is a cattle drive or a solitary lumbering moose. In fact, while driving these long, peaceful highways, a vehicle spotting can be surprising. Another surprise is how, upon driving under the Buffalo Creek Ranch sign, you are instantly transported from the stark beauty of North Park’s sage covered hills to the green lushness of their private valley with lovely alpine meadows, white aspen forests carpeted in green with the vibrant popping of blue columbines, and hay meadows, all sliding up into the rugged mountains of the Continental Divide, which nearby become Rocky Mountain National Forest. On the other side of the mountain range, farther than you can ride a horse in two days, you will find tourists by the thousands. On their side, equally as breathtaking, it is just you and your group: some cowboys and cowgirls ready to take you for a ride, a friendly fish-fiend or two ready to guide you to the best water on their ranch, your fabulous private cook, and at most, five other guests - a few people who, like you, enjoy solitude and nature.
So, what would you like to do while you’re there? That is the question you will hear before you arrive and that is the question you’ll hear every day that you are there, because there are no obligations, no schedules, only people waiting to attend to those desires. They want to know what you like to eat, and when you want to eat. They purposefully keep guest capacity to a maximum of six people, though the lodge can hold many more, in order to ensure guest satisfaction and complete participation in every single aspect of this magnificent ranch, from horseback riding, world-class fishing, and shooting.
Soak in Buffalo Creek Ranch’s incomparable beauty from horseback. Ride the ranch horses or bring your own. The ranch will match the horse and rider by ability and size. Out on the trail you will be assisted by a friendly wrangler to ensure your safety as well as the horses’. Lessons for children and beginners is provided, moving from a safe area setting to the trail, when both the trainer and the rider are confident of the rider’s safety.
If you are bringing your own horses, the wranglers see to the horses’ safety and comfort in Buffalo Creek Ranch style. Your horses will have the option of a roomy box stall in the newly built log barn as well as individual turnouts, constructed of smooth wood post and pole. Stalls are picked clean morning and evening. Riders with their own mounts have the option of riding guided or unguided.
As this is a working cattle ranch, real ranch work goes on here every single day. Guests are encouraged to participate in they are interested. Any phase of ranching is open to your level of interest. They won’t stage mock drives for you, but cattle always need to be tended, ridden and sometimes moved. All staff, including their professional cowboys, are experts at guest attendance, and enjoy the opportunity to mix up their work day a bit and possibly make a new friend. You’re here to enjoy, but they’ve found that they usually enjoy you at least as much. What can they say? It can get lonely up there.
For the traveler who is looking for the ultimate in solitude, privacy, and quality fishing in a majestic mountain environment, they invite you to make the Buffalo Creek Ranch yours for a while.
